In 2012, Johnson captured the inaugural Flyweight Championship by outpointing Ian McCall in their tournament rematch and defeating Joseph Benavidez at UFC 152 in Toronto. During 2013, he defended the belt against John Dodson by unanimous decision and submitted John Moraga with a fifth-round armbar at UFC on Fox 8 in Seattle.
