In 2018, Moicano outpointed Calvin Kattar in Brooklyn and submitted Cub Swanson via first-round rear-naked choke at UFC 227 in Los Angeles, then lost by stoppage to Jose Aldo in Fortaleza and Chan Sung Jung in Greenville. His submission game and boxing fundamentals are captured in his 84 Boxing and 88 BJJ ratings across these bouts.

Renato Moicano, the judoka nicknamed for a mohawk

Renato Moicano started judo at eight and studied to become a lawyer, but dropped out after two years to fight. His nickname means mohawk in Portuguese, given when he trained jiu-jitsu with one. He was undefeated in eight fights before winning the interim Jungle Fight featherweight title with a first-round rear-naked choke over Ismael Bonfim. In a draft he is a submission-first featherweight who also strikes well enough to set it up.

Moicano, by attribute

Boxing. A high 84. He outpointed Calvin Kattar over three rounds in 2018.

Kickboxing. Also 84, level with his boxing.

Wrestling. A modest 76, tied for his lowest.

BJJ. The top of his card at 88. His rear-naked choke of Cub Swanson in 2018 earned Performance of the Night.

Strength. A modest 76, level with wrestling.

Durability. A solid 78. Brian Ortega caught him in the third round of their 2017 fight, and it still earned Fight of the Night.

Cardio. A high 86. He finished Tom Niinimaki in the second round on ten days notice in his debut.

Fight IQ. A sharp 82. He beat Zubaira Tukhugov by split decision as an underdog in 2016.

BJJ at 88 is the finishing tool

Jiu-jitsu is the highest number on the card. He beat Ismael Bonfim with a first-round rear-naked choke for the interim Jungle Fight title, Tom Niinimaki with one on short notice, and later Cub Swanson with another. Against Jeremy Stephens and Calvin Kattar he showed he could win without submitting. He moved to American Top Team after the Ortega fight.

Wrestling and strength both sit at 76

His weakest numbers are wrestling and strength, so a heavy wrestler can set the pace. Brian Ortega submitted him with a guillotine in 2017, and later fights against Jose Aldo and Chan Sung Jung both ended in TKO losses. He needs to keep the fight where his jiu-jitsu can work.

Renato Moicano at lightweight

Scouting report

Moicano stopped Jalin Turner via second-round TKO at UFC 300 in April 2024, a win that extended a three-fight streak at lightweight after his move up from featherweight. "Money Moicano," from Brasilia, Brazil, and fighting out of American Top Team, carried the submission grappling of his featherweight years into the heavier division. His lightweight ratings include an 88 Cardio, 83 Boxing, and an 85 Overall score.

Renato Moicano at 155: a grappler who wins by choke

Moicano's first fight at lightweight came against Damir Hadzovic in March 2020, and he finished it with a rear-naked choke in round one. That set the pattern for a long run. He choked Jai Herbert in the second round in 2021 and Alexander Hernandez in the second round in 2022, then Brad Riddell in the first round later that year. In a draft he is a lightweight who wins by controlling position and hunting the back, with enough striking to survive the exchanges.

Moicano's card at lightweight

Boxing. A strong 86. He choked Brad Riddell in the first round in 2022 and stopped Jalin Turner in the second round in 2024.

Kickboxing. A high 84. He has been knocked out by Rafael Fiziev and choked by Islam Makhachev, but he has also gone the distance in several hard fights.

Wrestling. A good 82. Against Drew Dober in February 2024 he won a three-round unanimous decision.

BJJ. The top number by a wide margin at 92. He also beat Chase Hooper by decision in a 2021 grappling match.

Strength. The lowest number on his card at 80, still respectable for a lightweight.

Durability. A solid 84. Rafael Fiziev stopped him in the first round in December 2020, but he lasted all five rounds with Rafael dos Anjos on short notice.

Cardio. A very strong 90. The Dober fight went the full three rounds, and he went the distance again against Beneil Dariush in 2025.

Fight IQ. A sharp 88. He stopped Jalin Turner by TKO in the second round in April 2024, and he finished Chris Duncan in 2026.

BJJ at 92 and the win over Jalin Turner

Jiu-jitsu is far ahead of the rest of his card at 92. Choke finishes run through his lightweight career, and the Hadzovic, Herbert, Hernandez and Riddell wins all ended with a rear-naked choke. The Turner fight shows the rest of the picture, because Moicano stopped him by TKO in the second round in April 2024. His 2026 win over Chris Duncan ended in the second round by face crank.

Strength at 80, and the fights that got away from him

Strength is his lowest rating at 80. His lightweight losses fit a fighter who can be out-muscled or out-hit. Fiziev finished him by TKO in the first round in 2020, and Islam Makhachev submitted him with a brabo choke in the first round of their title fight in January 2025. He also lost a unanimous decision to dos Anjos at a 160-pound catchweight in 2022 and to Beneil Dariush in 2025. The 85 overall is the same in both of his editions, so there is no peak year to chase.
