Miller remained an elite lightweight contender between 2011 and 2013, submitting Melvin Guillard with a rear-naked choke in Nashville and defeating Joe Lauzon in a 2012 Fight of the Year at UFC 155 while dropping bouts to Benson Henderson and Nate Diaz. His Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt submissions, boxing, and toughness are reflected in an 86 BJJ and 84 Durability.
In 2014 and 2015, Miller submitted Yancy Medeiros with a first-round guillotine choke in Baltimore and defeated Danny Castillo in Chicago, while dropping stoppage losses to Donald Cerrone in Atlantic City and Michael Chiesa in Las Vegas. Miller compiled a three-fight winning streak in 2016, knocking out Takanori Gomi at UFC 200, defeating Joe Lauzon in their rematch in Vancouver, and outpointing Thiago Alves at UFC 205 in Madison Square Garden before battling Lyme disease through 2017.
